Winter

Winter

Children notice the coldest season of the year because adults often place restrictions on their outdoor activities. Children may ask questions about the changes they see in nature and talk about the weather - especially the cold temperatures!

Winter links with the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) learning outcomes, as children learn respect for their environment (2.4).

Learning experiences

  • Use technology and tools to monitor temperature data at your children's service. Find out when the coldest time of the day is. What is the lowest temperature you can record this winter?
  • Learn how cold things can get by manipulating and experimenting with snow or ice.
  • Plant winter seeds in your garden, like lettuce and silverbeet.
  • Warm yourself up by building a real or pretend campfire.
  • Bake biscuits or apple pie. Eat your treats with warm cups of milk.
  • Play with warm water. It's never too cold for water play if you heat it up.
  • If your outdoor play is becoming limited, bring gross motor equipment and nature play indoors.
  • Add winter dress ups to your dramatic play area, like scarfs, gloves and heavy jackets.
