Sun safety

Sun safety

Sun safety is an important life skill that is taught in early childhood education. Children can develop good habits while learning about health, safety, the environment, and the sun.

NQS and EYLF

The National Quality Standard requires all children attending an early childhood education service to be protected (2.2), which includes sun protection. Learning about sun safety also aligns with the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) as children learn to take responsibility for their own physical wellbeing (3.2), physical health and personal safety (3.3).

Learning experiences

  • Create a sunscreen station with empty sunscreen bottles, where children can pretend to apply sunscreen on dolls or stuffed animals.
  • Make broad-brimmed hats out of paper for toys.
  • Play find the shade, an outdoor game where children run around. When the leader calls "find the shade" everyone has to quickly stand in a shaded area.
