EYLF 5.4

Children begin to understand how symbols and pattern systems work

The Early Years Learning Framework asks children to explore patterns in daily life, including patterns in “feelings, ideas, words and actions and those of others”. Early childhood educators can establish structure within each day to help children “notice and predict the patterns of regular routines and the passing of time”.

The EYLF also asks children to use symbols in their play, with an understanding that they are a “powerful means of communication”.
