Children begin to understand how symbols and pattern systems work
The Early Years Learning Framework asks children to explore patterns in daily life, including patterns in “feelings, ideas, words and actions and those of others”. Early childhood educators can establish structure within each day to help children “notice and predict the patterns of regular routines and the passing of time”.
The EYLF also asks children to use symbols in their play, with an understanding that they are a “powerful means of communication”.
Learning experiences
- Provide children with loose parts made from both natural materials and processed materials. Encourage children to “sort, categorise, order and compare” (EYLF).
- Read books of all kinds, and other printed materials like brochures, musical sheet music, posters and product packaging.
- Create a designated space in your learning environment for talking and sharing.
- Listen to sounds, music and poetry. Make patterns with your body, by clapping a rhythm.
- “Use mark-making and drawing as symbols of communication”(EYLF).
- Explore symbols used by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.
- Play games with money and numbers, noticing the symbols used.
