Children express ideas and make meaning using a range of media
The Early Years Learning Framework asks children to use “language, sounds, gestures and movement” for play and self-expression.
Learning experiences
- Explore different forms of storytelling. Act out your favourite books as a form of dramatic play. Discover how stories are told within each child’s culture.
- Use technology to access multimedia stories (e.g. audio books, movies), or make your own photos and videos.
- Experiment with various visual art forms, even the ones you aren't familiar with yourself. When children play with collage and sculpture they are using “simple tools and techniques to shape, assemble and join materials they are using” (EYLF).
- To develop handwriting skills, encourage children to draw the shapes and symbols they see in their world.
- When children play with natural materials and processed materials they are exploring “a range of materials and their properties” (EYLF).
